Started
studying in 1970 at age 17. (LATE STARTER!!!)
Despite the gaps in the following list of dates (failing memory...) I have trained continuously in the martial arts since 1970, with only an 18 month 'rest' from formal instructor led training during the period from 1987 to 1989. 1970-1971: Judo at the Renshuden in London - Highlight was watching Anton Geesink overwhelm Renshuden Black Belts on a visit to the club - I as a lowly white belt didn't get closer than about thirty feet to the great man.. 1972-1974: Five Ancestors Kung Fu. Instructor Kim Han. Highlights were the arm and leg bashing exercises and the Sunday sessions where we would practice forms (I think it was mainly one form and I have - sadly - long since forgotten it) but I do remember (I hope accurately) that they used to brew Chinese tea for us all to drink. 1974 - 1977: I was training as an accountant and traveled all around the country on business so I took many ad-hoc classes as and when I could, not the best way to train but lots of fun. I think that this is the period when I did a few classes in Northern Mantis (In Hornsey in London I think) and a few classes (about seven weeks I think) in Feng Shou (Hand of the Wind) with Chee Soo at Seymour Hall in London. 1977-1979: I relocated to Banbury in Oxfordshire. Started studying Lau Gar Kung Fu. Instructor Steve Faulkner. Highlights would be being told off by Steve for smiling at an opponent whilst competing for Banbury 'B' team - I always enjoyed competitions too much to be any good. 1979-1980: Back in London. Yang style Tai Chi, long form. Instructor Erle Derby (Now days know as Erle Montaigue) who was then teaching the Yang Long Form Tai Chi that he was learning as a student of Chu King Hung. Highlights - Learning the entire form from a great instructor. 'Lowlights' after Erle moved back to Australia, stopping practice of the form and forgetting it. 1981-1982: Fencing (european) Foil, Epee, and Sabre, and English Quarterstaff. Instructor Jim Baud. 1982-1984: Nam Pai Chuan kung fu. In Golders Green in London - Not sure of the dates. Trained sporadically in this style, but introduced my cousin to it and he went on to become a second degree black sash. 1984-1987: Moved to Luton. Tried many of the local clubs including Spirit Combat, Lau Gar kung fu, Warr Gar kung fu, Karate, and etc... 1991 - 2004: Tai Chi. Original instructor Sifu Ng in Seremban Malaysia and then from 1996 Dick Watson and Simon Watson. 2003: Hap Gar Kune Kung Fu. Instructor David Rogers. I trained about three times a month for about eight months - I really enjoyed the style and David is an excellent instructor but the logistics of getting to Bedford were defeated by the 'tiresome' need to earn a living. 1989 to 2006 and hopefully onwards: Kyu Shin Ryu karate. Chief Instructor Dennis Graves, Instructors Colin Lefcovitch, Malcolm Barton, Grahame Alexandre. 1993 to 2006 and hopefully onwards: Tai Chi, teaching, firstly for adult education at a couple of colleges in Luton and then the class developed into the Luton Tai Chi Club (Which is now a member run club of which I am chief instructor). 2001 to 2006 and hopefully onwards: Protectics Martial Arts. I decided to list my own art here after last night's training - Thursday 18th May 2006 - I realised (don't ask me why it's taken me so long to figure this out) just HOW MUCH I learn when I am teaching. Student's ask questions and you have to explain things and in formulating those explanantions you actually explore and learn more about what you are doing. I'm luckier than many instructors as often my students (who have trained or do train in different arts) can actually come up with different viewpoints or variations on techniques and TEACH ME. Other stuff studied: Self Defence, more Judo, more Tai Chi, Self Defence, Hop Gar kung fu, Silat, Wing Chun kung fu, Shotokai Karate. Other, other stuff: The odd lesson here and there.... Various styles of Aikido (didn't get the names); various styles of Ju-jitsu; Koga Ryu Ninjitsu Bo techniques; Kick Boxing; Ninjitsu (Bujinkan); Shotokan, Wado Ryu, Shotokai, Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu and Uechi Ryu Karate; Escrima.
