I can offer your club or association seminars that will help you to test and blend your existing knowledge as well as letting you learn new skills. A seminar focuses on a specific topic such as 'Knife Defence', 'Body Control', 'One finger fighting', etc. However, all seminars emphasize the underlying concepts that bind all martial arts together. The seminars are responsive to the requests of the people attending.

Oh and by the way - If you ask me something about the arts that I don't know, that's OK, I'll simply say "I don't know..." You see thirty five years of martial arts training is not enough, indeed you couldn't learn all about the martial arts in a thousand and thirty four years!

If you are an instructor who would like to host a seminar please email me at host-enquiry@p-k-j.org

Knife Defence.
Martial artist defending against a knife attack. There are two main classes of knife attack, 'static' and 'active'. A static attack is where the knife is placed in close proximity to your body and a threat "I'm going to cut you" or a request "Give me your money" is made. An active attack is where someone with a sharp and probably fast moving blade is trying to cut or kill you.

Neither attack is 'fun' or 'interesting' - words like 'terrifying' and 'pants wetting' are more appropriate! However in both situations there are simple and effective techniques that you can learn that will maximize your chances for survival.

This seminar will cover in-depth, both types of attack and show you the practical verbal, psychological and physical skills that you need.

This seminar is fairly fast paced and physical.

Body Control.
Martial artist unbalancing an opponent. In a combat situation there are two bodies that you need to control, one is your attackers but the more important one is your own.

In this seminar you will learn all about centering and fine muscle control. Then we move on to learning about all the aspects of body control when you and an attacker are involved. Learn about Maai - Distancing; Tai Sabaki - Body shifting; Kamae - Posture; Kuzushi - Unbalancing. Whilst the terminology above is Japanese the principles apply to ALL martial arts.

This seminar is technical and fairly physical.

One Finger Fighting.
Martial artist controlling opponent with wrist and arm lock.Although he never used the term I got the idea for 'One finger fighting' from training (at a couple of seminars) with Alan Tattersall (The great Ju Jitsu instructor) who once referred to "old man's Ju Jitsu" in other words, being the most effective with only a little expenditure of energy.

There are LOTS of effective self-protection, self-defence and unarmed combat moves that can be done with 'one finger' - This day long seminar will methodically teach you how to defend yourself against a wide range of different (and realistic) attacks with the minimum of hard work.

Suprisingly, whilst the techniques taught require relatively little energy, the seminar which is fast paced and physical, does.

Tai Chi - Twenty-four move 'Peking' form - The martial aspects.
Martial artist performing Tai Chi.
Learning the martial aspects of this form of Tai Chi will be a revelation. If you think that the 24 move form is 'ONLY' for old people who want a little light exercise then you are in for a big surprise.

If you are new to the 24 move form Tai Chi but want to learn it, then this seminar will be an excellent introduction. If you already have some experience, then you will improve your understanding of the form and take your practice to a higher level.

The 24 move form was NOT designed to be a fighting form but as all the moves were taken from older martial forms of Tai Chi, the martial elements are still there if you know what to look for.

Learning how to apply the form in a martial context is extremely valuable even if you are not interested in Tai Chi from a fighting point of view. When you understand the possible martial uses, you will improve your postures, your movements and the energies that you put into the form.

Obviously if you are interested in Tai Chi as a fighting art then come and learn the strikes, locks, throws, breaks (including NECK BREAKS!) that are within the form.

This is a 'martial' seminar and a degree of fitness and stamina will be required by participants.

Tai Chi - Eight move form (Energy Eight Form).
Martial artist performing Tai Chi.If you have no previous experience of Tai Chi or if you want to learn a new form, learn the eight move Tai Chi form. This form was originally created by Graham Bryant however I have modified it to make it more martial.

This form is marvelous and is an easy to learn introduction to Tai Chi.

The seminar covers the basic postures and movements of the form and you will be shown two variations, one for relaxation and one that can be used for exercise and (optionally) building strength.

This seminar is moderately paced and should be suitable for anyone.

YOUR CHOICE
Martial artist in ready posture.
YOUR CHOICE
If you would want to host a seminar and would like me to cover a specific topic, please ask and I'll see what I can do. Obviously there are some topics that I am not willing to teach at an open seminar (Example, the offensive use of a knife) and others that I do not consider myself qualified or able to teach (Example, Flying spinning kicks). But contact me either by email at host-enquiry@p-k-j.org or by telephone on 05601 257 151 and I'll be happy to consider your request.

Seminars are available to anyone with experience of, or an interest in, the martial and self defence arts. These seminars are intense, enjoyable, challenging and safe.

One of my main 'gripes' about seminars is the lack of new material. Sometimes when you go to a seminar given by an instructor with whom you have trained before, you will be hard pressed to find anything new in the material you are given. Whilst I feel that it is appropriate in a class setting to go over material again and again (It's called practice and is the cornerstone of skill), a seminar should be an opportunity to see new material. So, if you should attend one of my seminars and you feel that I'm inappropriately covering material that you have seen me teach before, ask me and I will do my utmost to make the seminar material move on and increase your knowledge.
