Jul 15th 2006. Lots of changes today. Changed the way that menus and links display on every page. Added Google Adsense content to every page. Added an .xml sitemap so that Google can find site content easily. The biggest change today was the removal of dozens of old pages that had been the P-K-J 2005 site and the pre-2005 site that actually had content going back nearly ten years. I may at some future time (or if anyone emails a request) put up some of that old stuff in a sort of memory lane page... |

15th 2006. Today, I received an award of the rank of 7th dan in Protectics Karate Jutsu from the IMAA (International Martial Arts Association). Certificate Number 1408061 dated 14th August 2006. Click here to view certificate. A friend of mine who is a very experienced martial artist, always talks about three types of grades, earned, awarded and honorary. An earned grade is one that you get by taking a physical 'blood and sweat' grading exam. An awarded grade is related to your martial art and is awarded by a governing or an outside body who have knowledge of you. An honorary grade is a grade in an art that you don't practice however it is given as a sign of respect from that martial arts style. I suggest that there is also another category called 'self-awarded' which are those grades that people give themselves when they found their own styles and set up their own grading and ranking procedures. I currently have the following grades: 4th dan in Kyu Shin Ryu Karate -'earned' from Dennis Graves chief Instructor of Kyu Shin Ryu. 5th dan in Protectics Karate Jutsu - 'self-awarded'. 7th dan in Protectics Karate Jutsu - 'awarded' by IMAA. Full instructor at Advanced level of Tai Chi - 'awarded' by The Tai Chi Union for Great Britain. It is very nice to have grades and to be recognised by ones seniors and ones peers for the effort put into training and teaching. However, in my opinion you should be judged by what you can do and what you can teach others to do - Today!!! Also the study of martial arts should not be defined or limited by grades. I know a few people of various grades, that have, to all intent stopped learning years ago (they 'know' it all). I also know lots of other people that have in some cases been training for nearly half a century but are STILL learning as their passion is the arts and seeing how both they and their art can continue to develop. It is on this latter group of martial artists that I try to model myself... |
